Born in the favelas of Rio, Jorge Mário da Silva lived on the streets for several years in his teens. Equally inspired by the hyper-competitive samba schools of his neighborhood and by American soul and rock, he took on the stage name Seu Jorge (Portuguese for "Sir George"). Beginning his solo career in 2001, he explored samba-driven modern pop, acoustic soul, and psychedelic rock. His international breakthrough came with a role in Wes Anderson's 2004 film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, whose score consisted mostly of his acoustic performances of David Bowie songs in Portuguese.
